![]() SEEN LIVE IN BOSTONEARL KLUGH AT SCULLERS 8/16/2008 reviewby aboutblackboston.com Grammy award winner Earl Klugh and band were on fire Saturday night in Boston under a full moon at Sculler's Jazz Club. In concert, Earl played the track "SNAP" and other remarkable songs from his new album titled "Spice of Live". The spontaneous large crowd followed every note he played. The set contained old and new music. Earl Klugh has sold millions of records during his career and topped BillBoard Charts several times as a jazz artist. Backing him was argueably the best band ensemble that can shadow a musician as good as Earl Klugh and bring game to the table as well. There was Al Duncan adding textures on keys. Bassist Al Turner brought game with his two bass guitars: he has played for Pattie Labelle, Arthea Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Burt Bachrach and others. Mr. "Funk That" David Lee, on keyboard, who collaborated with Parliment Funkadelic on their hit song ATOMIC DOG, brought his 30 years of experience. David danced on funky jams more than the rest! Saxophonist Lenny Price has played a White House dinner hosted By President & Mrs. George W. Bush honoring American Jazz. In Boston with Earl, he blew on every track and sometimes played two saxophones at the same time. Brother Ron Otis on drums brought game as big as Lenny White, master drummer:Ron was rock steady on timing and beats, and he's the youngest band member. Scullers may be one of a few jazz club venues where you can hear the performers "thinking." It was a fine concert- Earl Klugh in Boston at Scullers.Funky Fresh Records co-sponsors Boston Music Marathon live concerts scheduled periodically in local venues to feature local Boston area unsigned Hip Hop and Rap music acts.(link) Our web site serves as a resource for all genres of black music in Boston. DAVID "FUNK THAT" LEE: "In Pursuit of Phatness" is the first album produced by D Lee, founder & leader of The Edge band out of Detroit, Michigan. The music covers a wide range of styling from contemporary instrumental JAZZ grooves like the title song, to R&B singing with some POP and REGGAE influences like, "Spiritual Man," "Get Me Through The Night," and "Put The Money In The Basket." "Rock The Boat" is a great PARTY song and is a favorite at live shows. This CD features some of the finest musicians and vocalists from Detroit including Kymberli Wright, the lead singer of Grammy nominated all female jazz group, "Straight Ahead." "In Pursuit of Phatness" includes ten original songs plus a beautiful arrangement of Chaka Khan's "Everlasting Love.” urls: http://www.myspace.com/stseung - We saw Mr. Lee performing with Earl Klugh at Scullers.
A warm shout to drummer Ron Otis, who also appeared with Earl Klugh at Scullers.
